How do I date an oil painting on canvas?

Examine the style of clothing, hair and framing materials visible in the work, as these shift predictably across decades and centuries. Signatures, inscriptions on the reverse, and the construction of the wooden stretcher frame also offer reliable clues to the decade of creation. Material analysis of the canvas weave and the type of nail or tack used can further narrow down the era. Comparing the palette to known dated works by similar schools confirms the approximate period.

What is the difference between a portrait and a landscape here?

Portraits focus on human subjects, ranging from aristocratic children to military officers, capturing likeness and social standing. Landscapes depict natural scenery, rural life, architectural views or domestic animals in pastoral settings. Both formats utilise oil on canvas, but their visual focus requires different compositional skills from the painter. Portraits rely on facial expression and costume, whilst landscapes depend on light and spatial depth.

How should I hang and light an oil painting?

Position the canvas away from direct sunlight, excessive heat sources, and damp walls to protect the woven fabric and oil pigments. Use stable wall fixings suited to the weight of both the canvas and its heavy giltwood frame. Lighting is best achieved with dedicated picture lamps using low-heat LED bulbs directed at the centre of the work. This highlights the brushwork without causing thermal damage to the fragile paint layers.

Are these works original or reproductions?

The listings comprise original hand-painted works created in oil on canvas during past centuries, alongside some period studio productions and later interpretations. Each piece bears unique brush marks and texture created directly by the artist's hand. Examining the canvas closely under magnification reveals the physical build-up of pigment and the weave of the fabric. This confirms the physical authenticity of the painted surface.
