How do I date a wooden settee?

Dating relies on examining the timber species, construction joinery methods, and stylistic cues present in the carved woodwork and frame design. Eighteenth-century pieces differ significantly in timber preparation and tool marks from later Victorian or Edwardian revivals. Comparing the upholstery webbing, internal stuffing materials, and secondary woods helps confirm whether a piece belongs to its purported historical period or a later revival movement.

Where should I place a settee?

A cabriole leg wooden settee suits reception rooms, hallways, or spacious bedrooms where the curved timber legs remain visible from multiple angles. Positioning the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources protects the polished wood and delicate upholstery fabrics. Allowing sufficient clearance around the curved legs prevents accidental scuffing and showcases the silhouette of the frame within the room.

How do I care for the wooden frame?

Maintaining the wooden frame involves dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and applying appropriate wax polish sparingly to nourish the timber. Avoid using silicone-based sprays that can penetrate existing finishes and attract dust over time. Inspect the joints periodically to ensure the frame remains stable and the cabriole legs support weight evenly without loosening at the seat rails.
