What is a cabriole leg dressing table?

A cabriole leg dressing table is a piece of antique bedroom furniture supported by curved legs that swell at the knee. These tables often include mirrors, drawers, or folding compartments for grooming. They appear in various styles from the 18th Century onwards, reflecting changing tastes in domestic design.

How do I identify periods?

Period identification relies on examining the timber species, construction methods, and decorative styles present on the item. For instance, walnut and specific crossbanding point to earlier centuries, while Art Nouveau mirrors indicate Victorian or early 20th Century production. Hardware and mount styles also offer clear chronological indicators.

Where were they used?

These tables served primarily in bedrooms or dressing rooms as dedicated spaces for personal grooming and cosmetic storage. Wealthy households utilised specialised forms like the poudreuse for morning routines. Today, they function equally well as writing desks or console tables in living spaces.

Are French and English styles different?

French examples often utilise exotic veneers, ormolu mounts, and marquetry inlay within Louis XV or provincial styles. English versions tend to favour solid oaks, red walnut, or mahogany with restrained carving. Both traditions employ the characteristic curved leg to soften the silhouette.
