What is a brown timber coffer used for?

These chests historically stored household valuables, blankets, and legal documents safely away from damp conditions. In modern homes, they function as practical storage furniture that doubles as a coffee table or blanket box at the foot of a bed.

How do I date an old wooden coffer?

Dating relies on observing construction methods, such as hand-cut dovetails, joined panel frameworks, and early iron or brass hardware. Tool marks and the type of timber used, from native oak to imported camphor wood, also provide clear clues to the period of origin.

Are camphor wood chests waterproof?

Camphor wood naturally repels insects and moisture due to its dense oils, making it ideal for protecting textiles during long journeys. While highly resistant to pests, these trunks are not entirely waterproof and require sensible indoor placement to preserve the timber.

What is the difference between a coffer and a chest?

The terms are often used interchangeably, though a coffer traditionally implies a more heavily constructed box used for valuables. Chests frequently encompass a broader range of utilitarian storage trunks, including military campaign boxes and flat-topped blanket containers.
