What is a military campaign chest?

A military campaign chest is a portable storage unit built in sections with recessed brass hardware. Officers used them during travel. The sectional design allowed easy transport on horseback or wagon without damaging the wooden corners.

How do I care for mahogany furniture?

Mahogany requires stable room temperatures and protection from direct sunlight to prevent timber drying. Regular dusting keeps the polished surface intact. Avoid placing damp items directly on the wood or marble tops to preserve the original finish.

Are brass mounts original to the chest?

Original mounts show consistent wear patterns and match the screw types used during the period of manufacture. Replacement hardware often leaves different fastening marks. Inspect the timber around the brass fittings for signs of later alteration or filled screw holes.

What is the difference between a cellarette and a chest?

A cellarette is specifically partitioned inside for bottle storage, whereas a standard chest provides open drawer space. Cellarettes function as specialised drinks cabinets. Most cellarettes date from the Georgian era and stand on short legs or feet.
