How do I clean a brass mesh spark guard?

Dust the wire mesh gently with a soft brush to remove soot and debris. Wipe brass frames with a dry cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners that strip vintage patination. For stubborn marks, use a mild soapy solution on the metal frame while keeping moisture away from the woven mesh to prevent rust.

Can I use an antique guard with an active fire?

Many of these pieces were built for active coal and wood fires, using iron and brass to withstand high temperatures. Check that the mesh remains intact and free of holes before placing it near an open flame. Smaller folding screens suit decorative use or gas hearths, whilst heavy nursery fenders offer robust protection for traditional hearths.

How do I date a Victorian spark guard?

Examine the construction methods, such as hand-woven wire mesh and heavy cast brass frames typical of nineteenth-century workshop production. Victorian examples frequently feature substantial brass top rails and stamped or embossed ornamentation. Stylistic cues like Rococo Revival scrolls or Empire Revival torches also help narrow the manufacturing period towards the middle and late nineteenth century.

What is the difference between a fire screen and a spark guard?

A fire screen historically served to shield a room's occupants from the radiant heat of an unlit or low fire, often using solid panels of fabric, wood, or decorative metal. A spark guard specifically incorporates wire mesh designed to let heat through while trapping flying embers. Many surviving pieces combine both functions through decorative brass frames fitted with fine mesh.
