What is a document chest used for?

These chests were built to store important papers, letters, and valuables securely in homes and offices. Today, they serve well for organising modern stationery, documents, and small collectables.

How do I date a wooden cabinet?

Dating relies on observing the timber types, construction methods, and hardware styles used in the piece. Earlier examples often feature dense hardwoods and hand-cut joints, while twentieth-century versions utilise simpler utility designs.

Where should I place a document chest?

These pieces fit naturally in studies, home offices, or living rooms as functional surface furniture. Their compact drawer configurations make them suitable for tabletops or as freestanding pedestals.

What woods are common in these chests?

Mahogany, oak, walnut, and rosewood appear frequently in higher-end traditional storage boxes. Utilitarian pieces and later filing units are often constructed from pine or painted wood.
