What is a brass bound desk?

It is a portable or modular piece of campaign furniture reinforced with brass corners and straps to withstand travel. These items include desktop writing slopes, lap desks and large military chests. Cabinetmakers built them for officers and travellers who needed a stable writing surface on the move. The brass hardware protected vulnerable wood edges from heavy knocks during transit.

How do I use a writing slope?

You open the hinged box to lay it flat on a table or stand, revealing a sloping baize or leather writing surface. The interior holds inkwells, pens and stationery. Many slopes feature secret drawers behind removable partitions for storing valuables. Closing and locking the box secures all the internal compartments for travel.

How do I date a campaign box?

Dating relies on timber choices, brass mount styles and construction methods. Georgian and Regency pieces often utilise rosewood or solid mahogany with hand-cut dovetails. Victorian examples frequently showcase figured walnut, amboyna or camphor wood. Heavier brass strapping and machine-made screws typically point toward the later nineteenth century.

Why are some pieces made of camphor wood?

Camphor wood was utilised for campaign chests and boxes destined for tropical climates because its natural aromatic oil repels insects. The dense timber also resists moisture damage. These pieces often retain a distinct botanical scent inside the drawers. Their robust construction made them ideal for officers serving in distant colonies.
