What is a blanket box?

A blanket box is a deep lidded chest intended for storing household textiles, garments, and bedding. They have served homes as utilitarian furniture for centuries. These pieces range from plain pine boxes to highly decorative carved oak coffers and exotic camphor wood travelling chests.

How were blanket boxes used?

Historically, these chests stored valuable woven goods, winter blankets, and personal linens safely away from dust and pests. They also functioned as benches or tables within smaller rooms. Travellers and military officers utilised specialised campaign versions to transport clothing and equipment across long distances.

Where should I place a blanket box?

A blanket box sits naturally at the foot of a bed for convenient linen storage. They also serve well in hallways as seating and boot storage. Placing them away from direct heat sources protects the historic timber from drying out and splitting over time.

How do I date an antique box?

Examining the construction joints, timber species, and type of hardware provides clear clues to a piece's age. Hand-sawn boards and pegged joinery point towards earlier centuries. Stylistic motifs like seventeenth-century carving or Regency brass binding help narrow down the exact period of manufacture.
