How do I hang a heavy antique mirror?

These large wall mirrors require secure fixings anchored directly into wall studs or masonry using heavy-duty brackets suited to the weight of the timber and gesso frame. Ensure the hanging wire or D-rings on the back match the load capacity to protect the original structure.

Where should I place a wall mirror?

Position the piece opposite a window to maximise natural light and create a sense of expanded space within the room. Keep them away from direct moisture sources to preserve the giltwood, paint, and original glass plates.

How do I date a beaded mirror?

Examine the materials and framing styles, as nineteenth-century examples often combine gesso, carved wood, and specific period motifs like Napoleon III or Louis Philippe. Archival pieces show distinct construction methods, such as oak frames paired with bevelled edges characteristic of the period.

How do I clean an antique frame?

Dust the beaded frame gently with a soft, dry brush to remove particles without disturbing delicate gesso or leaf finishes. Avoid liquid cleaners entirely on antique giltwood and painted surfaces to prevent stripping the historic finishes.
