How do I hang heavy wall lights safely?

Secure heavy wooden or bronze fixtures directly into wall studs or utilise appropriate masonry anchors depending on your wall type. The substantial weight of giltwood and cast metal requires robust fixings to support the projection safely. Ensure the electrical wiring matches the fixture capacity before mounting, consulting a qualified electrician to handle older brass or bronze lamp conversions.

Where should I place these wall lights?

Mount these fixtures on either side of a fireplace, mirror, or large piece of furniture to create balanced illumination and focal points. Their ornate frames suit principal reception rooms and hallways where ambient lighting enhances architectural details. Keep the height at eye level or slightly above to ensure optimal light distribution and to showcase the carved wood or gilt metal work properly.

How do I clean giltwood and bronze fixtures?

Dust giltwood surfaces gently with a soft, dry brush to prevent damage to the delicate gold or silver leaf layers. Avoid liquid cleaners and harsh chemicals that strip historic finishes. Metal components benefit from careful wiping with a lint-free cloth. Take care around polychrome painted areas to preserve the original pigments.

Can these antique wall lights use modern bulbs?

Many fixtures have been adapted for modern electricity during their history, allowing them to accept standard candle-style bulbs. Check the existing internal wiring to ensure it meets current safety standards before use. Low-wattage LED bulbs work well in older sconces as they generate less heat, protecting fragile gesso and wooden components from drying out over time.
