How do I identify an authentic piece?

Look for maker labels, workshop stamps and traditional pegged joinery. Solid timber construction and documentation help verify origin. Examine the grain and hardware for period-appropriate execution without modern machine tooling.

Will modern mattresses fit antique frames?

Many older single and double frames vary slightly from contemporary standard dimensions. Custom mattress sizing is often required for older wooden bedsteads. Check internal measurements carefully before ordering a new mattress to ensure proper placement.

How should I care for antique timber?

Maintain stable indoor humidity and avoid placing wooden frames near direct heat sources. Regular dusting with a soft cloth preserves the finish. Apply natural beeswax periodically to nourish dry oak or fruitwood surfaces.

What wood types are most common?

Oak is the predominant material across the selection, accompanied by fruitwood, sweet chestnut and satinwood. Iron and brass also feature in metal framework. Each material dictates the visual weight and structural character of the individual bedstead.
