How do I display an art nouveau glass vase?

Place these vessels where natural light can strike the surface to activate the iridescent finishes and multi-layered colours. Keeping them away from direct sunlight protects any delicate enamel or gilt decoration. Ensure they sit on stable surfaces away from high traffic areas because many feature complex metal mounts or fragile handles.

Were these glass vessels used for flowers?

Many were made as decorative ornaments rather than functional flower holders, though some larger vases accommodated stems. Their primary purpose was artistic display within wealthy domestic interiors of the period. Using them with water requires caution to prevent mineral deposits from harming historical glass interiors, especially on pieces with metal overlays.

How do I tell different periods apart?

Objects marked by nineteen hundred often show high-gloss iridescent finishes and organic Loetz or Kralik forms. Items from later decades tend to feature cameo landscapes or structural silver mounts. Victorian pieces in the selection lean towards heavy pewter or silver overlays combined with cobalt or coloured bodies.

What is silver overlay glass?

Silver overlay consists of pure silver applied in liquid form onto the exterior of a finished glass vessel. Once dry, artisans engraved or chased detailed floral and geometric patterns into the metal. This technique combined the fluid properties of art nouveau glass with the solid weight of silversmithing.
