How do I wire antique wall lights?

Wiring historic wall fixtures requires careful routing of modern flex through existing channels or backplates by a qualified electrician. Many pieces retain original backplates that adapt to standard modern wall junction boxes. Care is taken to preserve structural integrity, ensuring insulation components remain concealed while meeting current safety standards for domestic installation.

What is the difference between a sconce and a girandole?

A sconce is a general term for any wall-mounted lighting fixture designed to project illumination into a room. A girandole specifically incorporates a mirrored backplate to reflect and amplify the candle flame. Both forms appear frequently in period interiors, with girandoles typically offering a more decorative and light-enhancing function in formal spaces.

How do I date antique wall lighting?

Dating relies on stylistic indicators such as neoclassical motifs, rococo curves, or arts and crafts hand-wrought construction. Material composition, casting methods, and fixing screws provide further clues to the decade of manufacture. Comparing construction details with documented examples from makers and periods narrows the production window.

Where should I position wall lights in a room?

Wall lights are traditionally hung at eye level, roughly one hundred and fifty centimetres from the floor, to avoid direct glare. They work effectively flanking fireplaces, doorways, or large wall mirrors. Pairing identical sconces creates symmetry in formal reception rooms, while single lanterns suit hallways and transitional spaces.
