How do I know if a large set is entirely original?

Examine the underside of the seat rails and the construction of the joints across every single chair in the group. Original sets share identical timber age, tool marks, and subtle hand-cut variations that confirm they were built together in the same workshop. Subsequent additions or married chairs often betray themselves through differing secondary woods, altered blocks, or mismatched wear patterns on the stretcher rails.

What is the difference between a side chair and a dining chair?

Side chairs are light, portable seating pieces traditionally kept against the perimeter walls of a parlour or hall when not in use. Dining chairs are built specifically for sustained seating around a table during meals. In practice, eighteenth and nineteenth century dining sets were often referred to interchangeably as side chairs because the individual units lacked arms.

How should I care for antique upholstery and cane seats?

Protect fabric and leather upholstery from direct sunlight to prevent fading and dry cracking of the natural hide. Vacuum woven cane gently with a soft brush attachment to remove dust from the interstices without putting undue pressure on the strands. Maintain stable humidity in the room to stop wooden frames from shrinking and loosening the tension in cane panels or drop-in seats.

Can I mix single chairs with different armchairs?

Historic dining practice frequently paired a larger set of single chairs with matching armchairs, known as carvers, positioned at the table ends. Mixing unrelated pieces risks disrupting the visual harmony of the dining setting. When acquiring a set, check whether the carvers share the identical leg style, stretcher arrangement, and back design of the singles.
