What is a claret jug?

A claret jug is a pouring vessel specifically created for serving red wine during formal meals. They pair glass bodies with metal handles and hinged lids to control the pour. Victorian and Edwardian dining tables relied on these jugs to transfer wine from storage bottles to guests. The silver mounts often incorporate spouts designed to catch sediment.

How do I clean an antique decanter?

Cleaning requires warm water and mild detergent without soaking the silver mounts for extended periods. A soft bottle brush clears interior residue from narrow necks. Silver parts need a dedicated polishing cloth to avoid abrasive contact with the glass. Harsh chemical dips ruin antique silver plate and damage vintage glass surfaces.

What is a whisky noggin?

A whisky noggin is a miniature decanter designed for a single serving of spirits. They feature a sturdy handle and a small pouring lip. These compact jugs often sit on silver trays with matching spirit labels. They gained popularity during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries for evening drinks.

How do I date a silver mount?

British sterling silver mounts carry hallmarks that indicate the assay office, the maker, and the exact year of production. A date letter stamped into the metal reveals the precise year. Silver-plated pieces lack official date hallmarks but often display registry marks or manufacturer stamps. Stylistic details like Art Nouveau curves or Victorian engraving also help narrow the period.
