How do I hang a bottle ticket?

These labels hang from thin silver chains that fit around the slender neck of a glass decanter. The chain allows the tag to rest against the shoulder of the vessel without slipping off. Buyers should check that the chain is original to the piece and strong enough to support the weight of the silver tag.

What drinks are named on these labels?

Common inscriptions include Sherry, Madeira, Claret, Port, Gin, Rum, and Brandy. Less frequent titles name specific wines or contents like Hock and Cayenne. The lettering is usually capitalised and filled with dark solder or ink to stand out against the polished silver surface.

Are these labels sold in sets?

While many bottle tickets appear individually, matching sets of three or more occasionally emerge for sale. These sets allow collectors to label multiple decanters uniformly on a dining table or sideboard. Matched groups often share a single silversmith and period style.

How do I date an antique bottle ticket?

Hallmarks stamped on the reverse provide the key to dating, revealing the assay office city, the year letter, and the silversmith's mark. Georgian and Victorian pieces display distinct crown, lion passant, and date letters. Stylistic cues such as vine leaf piercing or shield outlines also point to the era of manufacture.
