Were these desks used at sea?

Many campaign tables, log desks, and purser's furniture pieces saw active service aboard naval vessels and merchant ships. Their compact dimensions and secure fittings were essential for cramped cabins. Other related items, such as gimbal lamps and clocks, were engineered specifically to counteract the constant motion of the ocean. They provided reliable utility for officers and crew members.

How do I care for antique wood and leather?

Maintain timber surfaces by applying quality beeswax periodically to nourish the grain and protect the finish. Avoid placing antique desks near direct heat sources to prevent the wood from splitting. Treat inset leather surfaces gently with specialised leather conditioners to keep the material supple. Clean brass fittings with a soft cloth without harsh chemical abrasives.

What is the difference between a Davenport and a campaign desk?

A Davenport is a stationary, compact pedestal desk with a sloped writing lid and side drawers. It offers a neat footprint suited for domestic studies and parlours. A campaign desk is constructed for portability, often featuring folding legs and two separable drawer sections. This design allowed military officers and ship captains to pack their workspace quickly.
