How do I date a rosewood chair?

Dating relies on stylistic markers, construction methods, and prevailing design vocabulary from periods such as Regency or Victorian. Examining the joinery and timber preparation offers further clues to the decade of manufacture. Makers' labels, where present, provide direct evidence of workshop origins and production dates.

Were these seats used for dining?

Many rosewood seats functioned as formal dining chairs, often produced in sets of four, six, or ten. Their sturdy frames accommodated regular domestic use around large tables. Other forms, such as library armchairs and piano stools, served specific functional rooms within the nineteenth-century home.

How should I care for rosewood furniture?

Protect antique rosewood from direct sunlight and drastic changes in humidity to prevent timber splitting or fading. Gentle dusting with a dry cloth maintains the surface without damaging the polish. Avoid chemical polishes that can degrade the historic finish and patinated surface over time.

What is simulated rosewood?

Simulated or faux rosewood involves painting an alternative, less expensive timber to imitate the distinctive grain and deep colour of genuine rosewood. This technique was common during the Regency period to achieve an expensive look economically. Skilled graining artists executed these finishes by hand to mimic natural timber patterns.
