How do I care for an antique wooden bed?

Maintain a stable room humidity and temperature to prevent the solid timbers and panel joins from splitting or shrinking. Apply a suitable wax polish periodically to nourish the wood surface. Avoid placing the bed near direct heat sources or in strong sunlight, which can fade and dry out walnut and oak finishes over time.

Will an antique bed take a standard mattress?

Many older beds were built to historical dimensions that differ slightly from modern standard mattress sizes. You may need to check the exact interior measurements of the frame before ordering a mattress. Some bed frames accommodate custom or slightly modified mattress sizes to ensure a proper fit within the wooden side rails.

How can I date an antique panelled bed?

Examine the timber species, tool marks, and assembly methods used in the hidden parts of the frame. Seventeenth-century pieces typically show hand-split oak and peg joinery, whereas Edwardian examples often display machine-planed components. Stylistic details like linenfold carving, geometric mouldings, or revival motifs offer further clues to whether a piece originates from the period or a later nineteenth-century revival.

Are antique panelled beds difficult to assemble?

Most traditional bedsteads use slot-in iron brackets, bed bolts, or wooden pins to secure the side rails to the headboard and footboard. Having an extra pair of hands makes positioning the heavy panelled sections much safer. Take care not to over-tighten metal bolts into aged timber threads to preserve the structural integrity of the joints.
