What is a monk's bench?

A monk's bench is a dual-purpose item of furniture that functions as a hall seat or armchair when the back is upright, and converts into a table when the back is folded forward. These pieces were historically used in domestic interiors to save space, providing both a place to sit and a surface for dining or working.

How do I use a convertible table at home?

You can place these versatile items in an entrance hallway as a seat for putting on shoes, then flip the top to create a temporary surface for post or keys. In a living room, a smaller metamorphic table functions as a coffee table that can easily be adjusted when extra surface area is required.

Are all convertible tables made of oak?

The majority of pieces listed under this category utilise oak as the primary structural timber, often complemented by metal, brass, or iron hinges and pivots. Some variants incorporate additional materials like baize, fabric, or needlepoint textiles on the tops or screens.
