How do I date an oak bedside cabinet?

Dating relies on observing construction methods, timber treatment, and stylistic markers such as Jacobean revival carving or Edwardian simplicity. Hardware choices and the presence of secondary woods also help determine the period. Earlier pieces from the 18th century often exhibit hand-cut joinery and simpler proportions compared to the mass-produced or revival items of the 1900s and 1930s.

Were these cabinets originally made for bedrooms?

Many items designed as small cupboards, side cabinets, or close stools served multiple domestic functions near firesides and beds alike. Close stools specifically accommodated chamber pots before modern plumbing became standard. Over time, buyers repurposed these compact wooden enclosures to hold books, water jugs, and modern bedside necessities.

How should I care for antique oak storage?

Maintain antique oak by keeping it away from direct heat sources and sudden temperature shifts that can cause the timber to split. Dust regularly with a dry cloth and apply occasional natural wax to nourish the polished surface. Avoid excessive moisture, particularly on tile tops or marble inserts, to protect the surrounding wood joints and historic finishes.
