How do I date an antique secretary?

Dating relies on examining timber choices, construction methods, and stylistic details such as bracket feet, cornice shapes, and handle hardware. Early eighteenth-century examples frequently employ walnut with featherbanding, while later Georgian pieces lean towards mahogany with different internal layouts. Secondary woods inside the drawers, such as oak or pine, also provide clues to the region of manufacture and the period of construction.

Were the mirrors original to these desks?

Mirrored glass in early cabinets was produced using bevelled plates set into wooden frames, often with arched or double-dome tops. Original glass typically shows minor foxing, ageing, or slight irregularities characteristic of early manufacturing techniques. Because mirrors are fragile, many surviving pieces have had their glass panels replaced at later dates during routine maintenance or restoration.

How do I care for a walnut secretary?

Maintaining walnut furniture involves keeping the timber away from direct sunlight and sudden humidity changes to prevent veneer cracking. Regular dusting with a dry, soft cloth preserves the polish without introducing moisture. Applying high-quality beeswax periodically nourishes the grain and maintains the natural lustre of the polished wood surfaces.
