How do you stack the sections?

Each tier rests independently upon the one below it using built-in interlocking pins and grooves rather than permanent fixings. This modular construction allows the entire bookcase to be dismantled easily for relocation. The base sits at the floor level, supporting the sequence of glazed bookshelf tiers, topped finally by a decorative cornice. Removing or adding sections requires simply lifting the tiers apart by hand.

Can these hold heavy books?

Solid oak and mahogany construction provides sturdy structural support suited for heavy law reports, reference volumes and bound folios. The enclosed shelving protects valuable collections from dust and atmospheric exposure. Each independent tier bears its own weight directly onto the section beneath it, preventing the sagging often found in tall traditional bookshelves. This engineering makes them practical for dense libraries.

How do the doors open?

Glass panels slide upward and inward on internal metal or wooden guide arms, resting flat above the books inside the shelf space. This mechanism allows users to access volumes without swinging hinged doors outward into narrow room spaces. When pushed back down, the door drops flush against the frame to seal the compartment. Each tier operates independently from its neighbours.

Are all modular bookcases made by Globe Wernicke?

Several contemporary British and American manufacturers produced similar sectional stacking cabinets during the early twentieth century alongside the original firm. Makers such as Minty, Lebus and Gunn constructed comparable barrister bookcases using similar modular dimensions. Interior stamps, paper labels or metal tags typically identify the specific manufacturer. Unsigned pieces frequently follow the same patented stacking principles.
