How do I install antique wall lights?

Most antique wall lights require professional wiring to integrate modern electrical fittings safely into your wall cavity. The backplate typically mounts directly to standard electrical junction boxes. Position the fixtures at eye level or slightly higher, depending on the ceiling height and the presence of mirrors or furniture below them.

Can I clean gilded bronze safely?

Dust the metal gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove surface particles. Avoid chemical polishes, abrasive pads, or water, as these can strip the delicate gold layer or damage the underlying bronze. Professional conservation is recommended if deeper cleaning is required to remove stubborn grime accumulated over the decades.

How do I date an antique applique?

Examine the construction methods, screw types, and casting marks on the reverse of the metal or wood. Hand-cut threads and irregular casting indicate earlier eighteenth or nineteenth-century origins. Stylistic cues such as neoclassical symmetry, rococo asymmetry, or specific revival periods also help narrow the manufacturing decade.

Are these lights electrified or for candles?

Many antique wall lights have been converted to electricity during their long working lives to suit modern homes. Some retain their original candle holders or drip pans alongside discreet modern wiring. Check the individual listing details to confirm whether a piece is wired for electricity or configured for traditional candle use.
