How were bedside cabinets used historically?

Bedside cabinets served practical functions in bedrooms, often acting as enclosed commodes to house chamber pots out of sight. They provided convenient surface space for lamps or night-time necessities. Over time, their utility shifted toward general bedside storage for books and personal items.

How do I date a mahogany cabinet?

Dating a mahogany cabinet involves examining the construction methods, hardware, and secondary timbers used inside the drawers. Georgian pieces often display simpler, heavier carcases, whilst Victorian versions may incorporate machine-sawn elements and darker ebonised finishes. Maker stamps or stylistic markers like reeded legs and satinwood inlay offer further clues to the manufacturing period.

Are French bedside cabinets different from English ones?

French bedside cabinets frequently incorporate distinct continental styling such as marble tops, ormolu mounts, and exotic wood veneers like tulipwood and amboyna. French Empire and Louis XVI styles emphasise decorative bronze work and painted finishes. English counterparts, by contrast, focus more heavily on solid mahogany and walnut construction with simpler functional forms.
