An enfilade is a long, low sideboard or buffet featuring a series of doors spanning its length. It was traditionally used in dining rooms to store porcelain, glass, and linens. Today, these pieces serve as substantial storage credenzas in living rooms or hallways, providing a long surface top for display.

How do I date an enfilade?

Dating relies on observing the timber species, construction techniques, and stylistic markers such as hardware and decorative carving. Pieces from the 18th century often display hand-carved chestnut or bleached oak, while 1930s examples may incorporate marble tops and Art Deco veneers. Comparing the stylistic details, like Louis XV Revival motifs or Empire styling, helps narrow down the period of origin.

Are these pieces suitable for modern homes?

Their low profile and exceptional length make them practical alternatives to modern media consoles or hallway credenzas. The deep internal cupboards accommodate modern storage needs easily. Placing them in a dining room, hallway, or spacious living area provides both surface display space and concealed storage.

What is the difference between an enfilade and a buffet?

An enfilade specifically denotes a very long piece with a continuous run of three or more doors. A buffet can be shorter and may feature a different arrangement of drawers and cupboards. In historical listings, the terms frequently overlap depending on regional maker terminology and the number of access doors.
