How do I date a flower ring?

Dating relies on combining the cut of the gemstones, the choice of metals, and the overall structural style. Georgian and early Victorian pieces often employ silver-topped gold, while Edwardian designs favour platinum-topped yellow gold with fine millegrain detailing. Later mid-century examples typically showcase cleaner geometric lines and solid white or yellow gold construction. Hallmarks, where present, provide definitive makers' marks and assay office years to confirm the era.

Are these rings suitable for daily wear?

Many antique cluster rings serve successfully as daily engagement or dress rings provided they receive proper care. Platinum and 18ct gold settings offer robust durability for regular use. Gemstones like diamonds, rubies, and sapphires withstand daily friction well, whereas softer materials like pearls or turquoise require extra caution against moisture and impact.

What is a daisy cluster?

A daisy cluster is a specific floral ring style where round diamonds or pearls encircle a central gemstone to resemble the petals of a flower. This configuration was immensely popular during the Victorian and Edwardian periods. The layout maximises surface sparkle by grouping smaller stones closely together around a contrasting centre.

How should I clean my antique ring?

Cleaning requires gentle immersion in warm water mixed with a mild dish soap and a soft-bristled brush to remove accumulated oils from beneath the stones. Harsh chemical dips and ultrasonic cleaners should be avoided, particularly for rings containing pearls, turquoise, or closed-back settings. Periodic inspection by a professional jeweller ensures that old claws and delicate settings remain secure.
