What is a campaign chest?

A campaign chest is a portable set of drawers made in two or more stacking sections, designed for easy dismantling by military officers on active service. They typically feature recessed brass drop handles and corner brackets to withstand rough transport. These pieces offer a practical modular storage solution for modern interiors while retaining a distinct nineteenth-century military aesthetic.

How do I spot an 18th-century piece?

Eighteenth-century pieces generally display hand-cut dovetails, solid timber drawer linings like oak or pine, and rich patination developed over centuries of use. Look closely at the backboards and drawer construction for signs of hand tools. Hardware placement and timber choice, such as Cuban mahogany or figured walnut, also help indicate the Georgian period.

Where should I place a dresser base?

A dresser base works well in a dining room, hallway, or kitchen to provide surface display area and deep drawer storage. Their shallow depth allows them to fit comfortably along narrow corridors or living room walls. Pairing the surface with a mirror or hanging art creates a balanced focal point in the room.

What is a brushing slide?

A brushing slide is a pull-out wooden board integrated just beneath the top surface or drawer of a Georgian chest. It served as a temporary shelf for folding garments or inspecting items before dressing. In contemporary homes, this sliding shelf functions neatly as a compact auxiliary surface.
