An enfilade is a long buffet or sideboard designed to provide extensive storage in a dining room or hallway. These pieces often feature multiple doors and drawers arranged in a continuous line. Originating in regional workshops, they utilise timbers like cherrywood and burr ash to create grand focal points. Their low profile allows the top surface to serve as a serving area or display space.

How do I date an antique cherrywood cabinet?

Dating relies on examining the construction methods, hardware, and stylistic details of the piece. Eighteenth-century models often feature hand-cut dovetails and pegged joinery unique to regional carpentry. Later nineteenth-century pieces adopt cleaner lines associated with the Louis Philippe period or industrial hardware improvements. Comparing the timber patination and secondary woods helps confirm the era of manufacture.

Where should I place a bedside cabinet?

Bedside cabinets suit bedrooms where compact storage and a surface for a lamp are required. Their modest proportions fit neatly alongside standard bed frames. Many examples include a small cupboard or drawer to keep nighttime essentials concealed. They add warmth through natural cherrywood tones to contemporary or traditional sleeping quarters.

How do I care for cherrywood furniture?

Cherrywood benefits from regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth to protect the polished surface. Avoiding direct sunlight prevents uneven fading of the natural timber grain. Applying a traditional beeswax polish occasionally maintains the lustre of the wood. Keeping the cabinet away from extreme temperature fluctuations protects the structural joinery.
