How should I frame antique caricature illustration works?

Protect these pieces behind glass with conservation-grade mounts to prevent the paper from touching the glazing directly. Keep them away from direct sunlight to preserve vulnerable watercolours, inks, and pastels. Ensure the framing materials are acid-free to stop the paper support from degrading over time. Simple wooden frames suit the historic character of these satirical works.

Are these works original drawings or period prints?

The selection includes both unique hand-drawn watercolours and pastel sketches alongside original mass-produced periodical prints. Check individual descriptions to distinguish between one-off artist drawings and published chromolithographs. Period prints were often issued unbound in satirical magazines, while finished paintings were executed independently by the artist. Both categories hold distinct collector appeal depending on the medium.

How do I identify the period of a caricature?

Examine the costume, facial hairstyles, and printing techniques to narrow down the era of production. Georgian and Victorian subjects often display distinct tailoring compared to early 20th-century or wartime illustrations. Signatures, publisher imprints, and historical figures depicted provide reliable clues for dating. Cross-referencing known publication dates helps place periodical plates precisely.
