What is the difference between a tallboy and a chest on chest?

A tallboy generally refers to a tall single-carcase chest of drawers or a wardrobe-style linen press combination, whereas a chest on chest specifically describes two distinct cabinetry sections stacked vertically. Both forms address the need for elevated storage, but the chest on chest design distinctly separates the upper smaller drawers from the deeper lower chest base.

How do I date a mahogany tallboy?

Dating relies on observing structural characteristics, timber choice, and hardware styles associated with periods such as the Georgian era or the Edwardian epoch. Dovetail joints and secondary timbers like oak or pine inside the drawers provide further chronological clues. Earlier 18th-century pieces often feature figured walnut and candle slides, whilst Victorian and Edwardian examples utilise machine-sawn elements and distinct proportions.

Where should I place a tallboy in a bedroom?

A tallboy suits wall spaces where vertical capacity matters more than surface area. Its high profile makes efficient use of compact rooms without dominating the floor plan. Ensure adequate clearance around the piece for drawers to open fully, particularly if the design includes a brushing slide or hinged locking bar.

What are brushing slides used for?

Brushing slides served historically as pull-out shelves for folding linen or as a temporary writing surface within the bedroom. They sit discreetly beneath the top drawer line. Modern owners utilise these surfaces to display small decorative items or as a convenient landing spot when organising daily wardrobe contents.
