What animals were most commonly painted?

Horses and dogs dominated animal portraiture, reflecting their central roles in transport, agriculture, sport, and companionship. Livestock such as prize bulls and sheep were also frequently commissioned by proud owners. Cats, monkeys, and birds appear less often, usually rendered in more domestic or exotic contexts depending on the period.

How do I date an antique animal portrait?

Dating relies on clues such as the artist's active period, the framing style, and the preparation of the canvas or paper. Costume details of any human handlers or the style of the signature can also narrow down the decade. Clothing, tack on horses, and painting techniques shifted visibly between the Georgian era, the Victorian period, and the early twentieth century.

Were these portraits meant for homes?

Many were commissioned for country houses, hunting lodges, and urban parlours to celebrate prized possessions or beloved pets. Others served as records for breeders and estate owners. Larger oil paintings typically hung in formal reception rooms, while smaller watercolours and drawings suited more intimate spaces.

How should I care for an oil painting?

Keep paintings away from direct sunlight, excessive heat sources, and damp environments to protect the canvas and pigment. Dust the surface gently with a soft, dry brush without applying pressure. Avoid using commercial cleaning sprays or water on the painted surface, as these can cause irreparable damage to historical varnishes.
