How do I wear a bar pin safely?

Push the pin through a firm weave of fabric, such as a lapel or heavy scarf, rather than delicate silk. Ensure the safety catch or C-clasp is securely engaged behind the bar. For added security on valuable antique pieces, slide a small silicone stopper onto the sharp tip of the pin behind the fabric before fastening the clasp.

How do I tell Victorian from Edwardian pins?

Victorian pieces tend to feature heavier, warmer rose gold settings, often with bold gemstones like garnets, moonstones, or dark opals in dense cluster arrangements. Edwardian designs shift toward lighter yellow gold or white highlights, favouring airy openwork, garlands, crescents, and pale gems like seed pearls, peridots, and aquamarines.

Were these pins used as closures?

Yes, many of these slender items served practical roles fastening lace collars, cravats, lightweight scarves, and shawls during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. While heavier pieces could secure thick woollens, most delicate bar pins functioned primarily as ornamental dress accessories rather than heavy fasteners.
