Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 19th-century French Rococo Revival console table and matching pier mirror combination consists of giltwood, white marble, and glass in a gold colourway. The ensemble stands 238.7 cm in total height, with the table measuring 85 cm wide, 84.7 cm high, and 34.3 cm deep, while the mirror spans 83.2 cm wide and 154 cm high. The table rests on two cabriole legs, supporting a serpentine white marble surface with a thumb-mould edge, and displays scrolling foliate decoration across the frieze, knee, and stretcher. The matching tall arched pier mirror features a majestic pediment with rococo leaf carving, original glass showing slight foxing, bead moulding, and predominantly original gilding. Suitable for a narrow wall space, this piece sits in a hallway or alcove to provide a functional surface and reflective accent. The giltwood finish catches ambient light while the ornate cresting shell flourish crowns the top edge of the frame. The robust marble slab offers durability for display items, complemented by the intricate carved motifs on the stretcher base. The construction integrates traditional joinery methods suited to formal nineteenth-century drawing rooms and reception spaces, bringing decorative presence to transitional interior layouts.

FAQs

Originating in 18th-century French design and continuing through the 19th century, pier sets were specifically created to occupy the wall space between two windows, known as the pier. The high-mounted mirror reflected external light back into the room, while the narrow console table provided a decorative surface without obstructing traffic flow in hallways and drawing rooms.

These sets were typically constructed from carved pine or lime wood coated in gesso, finished using water gilding with real gold leaf over a clay bole base. Tops were crafted from fine white or variegated marble, while the mirrors featured hand-silvered plate glass.

Authentic period pieces show subtle signs of age such as reddish clay bole showing through worn gold leaf, fine cracks in the gesso plaster, and hand-carved joinery on the wooden framework underneath. Additionally, the marble top should show age-appropriate patina on its underside and edges.

Positioning an ornate gilded ensemble against a neutral or minimalist backdrop creates a focused architectural focal point in narrow entryways, foyers, or dining areas. Combining the classic gilded finish with clean contemporary lighting or modern artwork provides a balanced stylistic contrast.

Dust giltwood surfaces gently with a dry, soft goat-hair brush, avoiding water, liquid polishes, or commercial cleaners that can dissolve water gilding or lift gesso. Clean marble surfaces using a damp microfibre cloth with mild soap, wiping dry immediately to prevent moisture staining.
