A lowboy is a small table or chest of drawers developed during the 18th century, primarily in England and America. Designed with a top surface and one or two rows of drawers, it served as a dressing table or side table in bedroom and parlour settings.

Georgian lowboys were typically constructed from mahogany, walnut, or oak, featuring hand-dovetailed drawer joints, solid timber drawer linings, and cast brass swan-neck or batwing handles. Cabriole legs ending in pad, ball-and-claw, or trifid feet are characteristic structural elements of the era.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of hand manufacturing, such as hand-sawn wood marks on the back panels, uneven dovetail jointing, natural shrinkage in timber construction, and aged brassware with original fixing bolts. The underside of the carcass should show unplaned wood and period construction marks.

An antique lowboy functions effectively as a hallway console, side table, or bedroom vanity. Pairing the warm timber tones with contemporary lighting, framed artwork, or neutral wall shades creates a balanced contrast between historical and modern elements.

Maintain mahogany by applying a beeswax polish along the grain twice a year to preserve the patina and protect the wood finish. Keep the item away from direct sunlight, central heating vents, and high humidity to prevent timber movement, cracking, or fading.
