Early 18th Century Walnut Lowboy, George I Period

18th century
Description

A Very Good Quality And Extremely Attractive Early 18th Century George I Period Walnut Lowboy, Or Side Table, Having Superbly Figured Quarter-Veneered Top With Featherbanded Decoration And Re-Entrant Moulded Corners, Above One Long And Three Short Drawers With Featherbanded Decoration And Old Replacement Brass Plate Handles, The Elegantly Shaped Frieze Raised On Cabriole Legs Terminating In Turned Pad Feet.

This is a particularly attractive example of an early Georgian walnut lowboy, with the beautifully figured walnut veneers, elegant shape and unusual arrangement of drawers combining to give the piece considerable charm and character. It retains a lovely warm colour and surface throughout, with the usual old marks, scuffs, minor repairs and imperfections associated with over 300 years of age and use, all blending in nicely.

Lowboys were originally used principally as dressing tables, although nowadays they are wonderfully versatile pieces of furniture, equally suited to use as a side table in a drawing room, hallway or bedroom. This particular example is of very practical proportions and has a lovely decorative appearance.

As with all items which we offer for sale, this walnut lowboy has been carefully inspected and attended to in our workshops by our skilled traditional antique furniture restorers, where it has received an appropriate natural wax polish and is now ready to place straight into the home.

This early eighteenth-century George I walnut lowboy, or side table, is constructed from walnut, brass, and oak with a warm brown finish. The table measures 73 cm high, 72.5 cm wide, and 44.5 cm deep, presenting a rectangular quarter-venereed top with featherbanded decoration and re-entrant moulded corners above one long drawer and three short drawers. The drawers display featherbanded decoration and old replacement brass plate handles with brass drop handles, while the shaped frieze is raised on cabriole legs terminating in turned pad feet. Lowboys were originally used principally as dressing tables, although today this piece serves as a versatile side table suited to placement in a narrow wall space, hallway, or bedroom. The surface displays old marks, scuffs, minor repairs, and imperfections from age and use, maintaining a natural wax polish across its wood surfaces and hardware elements.

A lowboy is a small table equipped with one or two tiers of drawers, originating in late 17th-century Britain and reaching prominence during the George I era. Designed primarily as a dressing table or side table, it features distinctively shaped aprons and cabriole legs.

18th-century lowboys were predominantly crafted using walnut, often featuring figure-matched walnut veneers over oak or pine carcases. Hardware typically comprised cast brass drop handles, backplates, and engraved keyhole escutcheons.

Authentic George I lowboys typically exhibit hand-dovetailed drawer joints, oak secondary timber inside drawer linings, hand-carved cabriole legs ending in pad or ball-and-claw feet, and genuine wear patterns consistent with natural age around the base and handles.

A walnut lowboy functions effectively as an entryway console table, a bedside table, or an accent piece in a living room. Pairing its rich wood tones with modern minimal lighting or contemporary artwork creates a balanced contrast.

Maintain walnut furniture by applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the patina. Avoid placing the table near direct heat sources or in direct sunlight, and wipe spills immediately using a soft, dry cloth.
