This Meiji period Japanese totai shippo vase dates to circa 1890 and is executed in the cloisonne tree-bark style using porcelain, enamel, copper wire, and traditional Japanese urushi lacquer. The bulbous vessel features a textured dark brown exterior simulating tree bark, ornamented with an autumnal scene incorporating a bird in flight, flowering peonies, withering lotus leaves, and foliage bearing red and orange berries, all delineated by fine cloisonne wirework. The flared neck displays geometric enamel patterns in black, red, and green. Three details visible in the photograph are the metallic sheen catching the light on the bird's wing, the distinct flared rim at the top of the slender neck, and the warm bronze tones highlighting the raised bark texturing. The piece measures 19.5 cm high, 10 cm wide, and 10 cm deep. It suits placement atop a sideboard or within a gentleman's library as a decorative accent.

Totai Shippo is a specialised Japanese metalwork and ceramic technique developed during the late nineteenth century, featuring cloisonne enamel applied directly over a porcelain or earthenware body rather than a standard metal base.

These pieces typically consist of a porcelain foundation coated with textured brown enamel resembling tree bark, combined with thin copper wire cells filled with coloured glass enamels to form detailed patterns.

Authentic examples feature an underlying ceramic base visible at the foot or rim, delicate wirework outlining nature scenes, and a characteristic bark-textured enamel ground applied across the ceramic exterior.

Displaying the vase on a polished dark wood sideboard, within a minimalist glass cabinet, or alongside neutral-toned ceramics allows the detailed handcrafting and rich earthy tones to serve as a focal accent.

Clean the surface gently using a dry, soft microfibre cloth to avoid disrupting delicate wire borders or enamel sections, ensuring liquid cleaners and harsh chemicals are strictly avoided.
