This Edo period Japanese cloisonne enamel small plate dates from circa 1860. The round decorative plate has a diameter of 18.5 cm and a depth of 1.5 cm, made from copper, vitreous enamel, and brass. The vibrant design displays a figurative illustration of a bearded seated man in traditional clothing beside a smoking censer on a hillside, set against a turquoise blue crackle-effect background with a green scrollwork border. Fine details include curling smoke rising from a small pot, deep purple and indigo blue tones in the attire, and tiny porous firing holes reflecting early manufacturing methods. A heavy quality piece for its size, it suits placement on a sideboard top in a living room or hallway as a decorative display object.

Japanese cloisonne, traditionally known as shippo-yaki, involves applying vitreous enamel pastes into metal wire compartments soldered onto a metal base vessel. During the Edo period, artisans refined techniques to create detailed pictorial compositions depicting human figures, mythology, and natural motifs.

Traditional Japanese cloisonne plates feature a copper or bronze metal substrate, thin copper or brass wire cell walls (cloisons), and vitreous enamel pastes made from ground glass suspended with mineral metallic oxides for colouring.

Authentic 19th-century pieces often exhibit hand-hammered metal bases, subtle surface pitting or microscopic pinholes in the enamel firing, and delicate wirework. Early examples frequently feature opaque enamel grounds and show hand-finishing marks on the reverse rim.

Display the plate upright on an acrylic or wooden stand atop a dark wood sideboard to highlight its vibrant blue enamel tones. Alternatively, mount it within a modern shadow box frame or alongside minimalist wall artwork to create an eclectic focal point.

Dust gently with a clean, dry microfibre cloth to remove surface dust. Avoid liquid cleaners, water immersion, or abrasive chemical polishes, as moisture can seep into hairline glaze cracks and oxidise the underlying metal wiring.
