This Japanese Totai Shippo vase dates from the Meiji period around 1890 and is executed in ceramic, enamel, and wood with a dark brown colour. The piece takes the form of a ceramic vessel finished in a textured tree-bark ground incorporating traditional Japanese urushi lacquer, decorated with a fine dragon motif and fitted with twin scrolled handles and a scalloped, flared rim. The underside of the base bears an original black lacquer finish with a signature, and the vessel rests on a carved wooden stand with curved feet and openwork floral detailing. Measuring 17.5 cm high, 17.5 cm wide, and 13.5 cm deep, this item suits placement on a sideboard top in a gentleman's library. It brings historical Asian artistry into a domestic interior as a decorative display object.

Totai Shippo refers to a specialized Japanese enamelware technique developed during the late Meiji period where cloisonne decoration is applied onto an earthenware or ceramic body rather than a standard metal core, frequently featuring a textured tree bark effect.

These pieces typically feature a stoneware or terracotta ceramic body coated with a textured dark enamel ground, framed by fine cloisonne wires, and detailed with vitreous enamel glazes.

Authentic late nineteenth-century examples feature detailed wire work, a distinctive textured ground resembling natural tree bark, a ceramic interior rather than metal, and often marked or signed bases.

Positioned on a sideboard top, mantelpiece, or console table, an earthenware cloisonne vessel serves as a rich tactile accent that complements dark timber furniture and curated antique displays.

Clean gently using a soft dry brush or microfibre cloth to remove dust from the textured surface, avoiding liquids, submersions, or abrasive detergents that could damage the delicate enamel work.
