James Shoolbred & Co. were a famous and well-regarded firm of furniture makers and furnishers with headquarters with large headquarters in the Tottenham Court Road and subsiduary shops in Grafton Street and University Street.

This hall rack is an example of their most recognisible 'Art Furniture' style, possibly designed by H.W Batley.

The hall rack was presumably designed to complimemt Schoolbred's stick stand and hall bench, but is a rarer find than either.

The Aesthetic Movement emerged in the late 19th century, promoting art for arts sake by focusing on simplified forms, craftsmanship, and influences from Japanese design, moving away from heavy Victorian ornamentation.

These pieces were typically crafted from solid hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or mahogany, frequently accented with cast brass or copper hooks, bevelled mirror glass, and sometimes ceramic or metal drip trays.

Authenticity is indicated by traditional joinery methods, hand-bevelled mirror glass with natural ageing, heavy cast metal hardware with authentic oxidisation, and timber displaying appropriate shrinkage and patina.

Mount the piece in a modern hallway to provide practical coat and accessory storage while introducing historical texture and warmth through the aged timber and metallic details.

Clean the wood periodically using a soft, dry cloth and high-quality beeswax to nourish the grain, avoiding silicone-based polishes. Keep brass unlacquered or clean gently with a non-abrasive cloth to preserve the historical patina.
