This late nineteenth-century Italian occasional table dates from around 1880 in the Italian Revival style. Fashioned from fruitwood with a terracotta red finish, the surface displays hand-painted polychrome floral bouquets and green foliate borders in a Florentine design. The scalloped tray top features a raised gallery rail, supported by four turned legs with bulbous turnings and pad feet, and a matching decorated oval stretcher base. Surface wear includes visible marks to the top panel. The piece measures 50 cm high, 43 cm wide, and 27 cm deep. Placed at the end of a sofa or beside an armchair, this occasional table serves as a functional display surface for decorative objects, lamps, or small accessories in a living room, bedroom, or hallway interior.

Polychrome furniture refers to wooden items decorated with paint or gesso in multiple colours, a decorative technique widely practised in Italy during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

These pieces were typically carved from softwoods or hardwoods, covered with a prepared gesso layer, and decorated using natural pigments before being sealed with protective varnish.

Authentic period examples feature natural surface craquelure, age-appropriate pigment wear around the edges, and traditional hand-carved joinery underneath the tabletop and frame.

Position the piece as an accent alongside a neutral modern sofa or within a reading corner to allow the hand-painted floral motifs to act as a distinctive focal point.

Dust gently using a dry, soft microfibre cloth, avoid liquid detergents, and position the piece away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent pigment flaking.
