Barrel-back settles originated in public houses and farmhouses during the 17th and 18th centuries, designed with high curved wooden backs to shield occupants from drafts and trap heat from nearby hearths.

Traditional settles were predominantly constructed from sturdy native timbers such as elm, oak, and pine, chosen for their durability and availability in local rural workshops.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails and pegged mortise and tenon joints, alongside natural timber patina, wear patterns, and vernacular construction methods.

An antique wooden settle works well as a statement hallway or kitchen seating piece, softened with textured linen cushions or a woollen throw to balance its architectural presence.

Preserve antique elm by keeping it away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber splitting, applying natural beeswax periodically to nourish and protect the wood.
