This William IV secretary bookcase from the 1800 period belongs in a gentleman's library. It is made of dark brown flame mahogany veneers with brass hardware including escutcheons and ring handles, standing on a plinth base. The upper section consists of two panelled doors flanked by spirally turned columns, decorated with carved corner spandrels and edge mouldings. The central writing drawer folds down to reveal small interior drawers and a small door, flanked by four small drawers on either side. Below, a recessed kneehole sits between two side cupboards matching the upper doors. Measuring 170 cm wide, 220 cm tall, and 49 cm deep, the piece offers substantial storage for books and paperwork. In a modern interior, this imposing secretary bookcase suits a study, home office, or living room as a functional workspace and display cabinet. The rich wood grain provides warmth and traditional character while holding volumes behind its glazed or panelled upper doors. The configuration combines a writing surface with extensive compartmentalised storage, making it practical for daily administrative tasks as well as organising reference materials. Its formal architectural styling anchors a room with refined period presence.

Originating between 1830 and 1837, William IV furniture bridges the transition from understated Regency proportions to heavier Victorian forms, characterised by robust silhouettes, reeded or spirally turned columns, and rich flame mahogany veneers.

Craftsmen primarily used solid mahogany frames faced with figured mahogany veneers, featuring hand-dovetailed drawer linings, brass locks, turned handles, and pull-out writing surfaces lined with leather or felt.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetails, original brass hardware, evidence of natural timber shrinkage along veneer panels, uniform aged patination, and hand-planed backboards rather than modern plywood.

Position the cabinet as an architectural focal point in a study or formal room, contrasting its dark timber tones against neutral walls, contemporary artwork, and modern ambient lighting.

Maintain a stable indoor humidity level to prevent veneer lifting, keep the piece away from direct sunlight and radiators, and dust regularly with a dry microcrystalline cloth, applying wax sparingly.
