FAQs

Kidney-shaped tables, often known as table rognon, gained popularity in France during the 18th century, particularly within the Louis XV and Louis XVI periods. Their distinctive curved silhouette was designed to fit comfortably against the body when seated, making them popular writing and occasional pieces for boudoirs and salons.

Authentic pieces are typically constructed using fine hardwoods such as mahogany, kingwood, or walnut, featuring intricate wood veneers and marquetry patterns. They are frequently adorned with cast or gilt brass mounts, pierced gallery rails, and slender cabriole or tapered legs.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the joinery, wood ageing, and hand-cut dovetails within the drawer construction. Genuine period items often exhibit hand-chased or fire-gilt brass ormolu mounts rather than modern cast metals, along with consistent timber shrinkage and patination.

These pieces function well as sophisticated bedside tables, accent pieces flanking a sofa, or standalone display surfaces in a living room. Pairing them with contemporary minimalist lighting or abstract art creates a balanced contrast that highlights their classical craftsmanship.

To preserve the delicate veneer and French polish finish, keep the tables out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources to prevent cracking or warping. Dust regularly with a dry, soft cloth and avoid chemical polishes, using high-quality beeswax sparingly if conditioning is necessary.
