FAQs

Washstands became essential bedroom furniture in European homes during the 18th and 19th centuries before the widespread installation of indoor plumbing. They were designed to hold a basin, pitcher, and personal hygiene items for morning and evening washing.

Traditional washstands combined functional materials such as forged iron, cast brass, or hardwoods for the structural frames, paired with impervious surfaces like marble, tile, or zinc tops to resist water damage, alongside ceramic washbasins and jugs.

Authentic pieces typically feature period-appropriate construction methods such as hand-forged metalwork, genuine marble slabs with natural veining, and hand-painted ceramic accessories showing historical wear and craquelure consistent with age.

An antique washstand can be integrated into contemporary spaces as a distinctive console in a guest bathroom, a hallway accent, or a plant stand, contrasting industrial metalwork with modern textures.

Preserve the piece by dusting the metal frame regularly with a dry cloth and sealing the marble surface periodically with a neutral stone sealer to protect against staining from moisture.
