Description

An unusual Victorian cast iron washstand, the bevelled mirror back surmounted by a putto and flanked by urn topped columns over a foliate cast panel, two small lower shelves and inset with three pottery tiles, the white Carrara marble top over a folaite cast apron, the end supports with putto holding floral garrlands and joiined by a lower bar stretcher. Bears cast Restistration marks for 1899.

This would make an excellent bathroom sink. The marble surface lifts off and could be cut to make a sink aperture. The tiles are easily removed from the back and could replaced to suit a different colourscheme - Delft tiles would be a good option.

In good, restored condition, the lower bar stretcher is replacement.

FAQs

Victorian washstands became prominent household fixtures during the 19th century before indoor plumbing was commonplace in every bedroom, providing a dedicated space for morning washing and grooming.

Traditional washstands incorporated durable materials such as cast iron or hardwoods for the structural frames, topped with marble or tile splashbacks to withstand moisture and heavy daily use.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit period-specific casting techniques, hand-carved or molded details, original marble slabs with natural veining, and structural wear consistent with nineteenth-century manufacturing methods.

A vintage washstand can be integrated into modern spaces as a distinctive console table in a hallway or as a characterful vanity unit within a contemporary bathroom.

Cast iron should be kept dry to prevent oxidisation and cleaned with a soft cloth, while marble surfaces require pH-neutral cleaners and regular sealing to protect against stains.
