Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An eight-day longcase clock, commonly known as a grandfather clock, is a tall, floor-standing pendulum clock powered by weights that require winding once every eight days. Popularised during the Georgian era, these clocks represented both technological precision and cabinetmaking skill.

Cases were primarily crafted from regional hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or mahogany, often featuring solid or veneered timber construction. Clock dials during the 18th century were typically constructed from cast brass with applied silvered chapter rings or, later in the century, painted sheet iron.

Authentic 18th-century examples display period-correct joinery, such as hand-cut dovetails and saw marks inside the casing. The movement should match the dial design and case proportions, featuring cast brass spandrels, hand-engraved maker signatures, and period mechanical components.

Position the longcase clock as a vertical focal point in a hallway, dining space, or drawing room. Pairing dark or medium oak timber tones against neutral plaster or muted paint palettes allows the wood grain and brass dial work to stand out.

Keep the timber case in a climate-controlled environment away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent shrinkage or warping. Mechanical movements require regular professional lubrication and cleaning every five to seven years by a qualified horologist.
