Small Persian Tribal Carpet, Circa 1900, 2.62m X 1.78m

1900 - 1920
Description

This charming tribal carpet was created by the talented weavers of the Khamseh Tribe who migrated in southern Persia for centuries before settling into the towns and villages around the city of Shiraz from the end of the 19th century. Woven with fine lustrous wool and rich dyes, this is a lovely example of Khamseh weaving. The linked medallions on the sapphire blue field are filled with various geometric ornaments and are surrounded by myriad chickens and quadrupeds. There are several borders which are different and filled with geometric ornaments. All the colours have been produced from natural dyes, and are rich and subtle at the same time. It is also a great size and would be useful in many decorative settings. Great tribal character but is also very decorative. The pile is glossy and velvety and has survived in very good condition with only a few traces of wear . Original selvages are intact. The ends are good. Ready for immediate use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Persian tribal carpets are hand-woven floor coverings created by nomadic or village weavers in Persia, characterised by bold geometric motifs, tribal symbology, and rich natural colour palettes.

Traditionally, these carpets were constructed using hand-spun wool for both the pile and the warp/weft structure, though some regions utilised cotton foundation threads. The yarns were dyed using natural, plant-based dyes derived from madder root, indigo, and pomegranate skins.

Authentic antique Persian rugs feature hand-tied knots visible on the reverse side, slight asymmetrical variations in the pattern, and natural abrash, which is a subtle shift in yarn colour resulting from small-batch dyeing techniques.

An antique Persian carpet grounds a modern room by introducing texture, warm tones, and historical depth. It works effectively placed beneath minimalist furniture or layered over neutral sisal rugs in eclectic schemes.

Regular maintenance requires gentle vacuuming without a rotating beater bar to avoid pulling fibres. Professional hand-washing using pH-neutral wool cleansers is recommended for deep cleaning, alongside rotating the carpet annually to ensure even wear.
