Large L Epee Gorge Case Moon Phase Date Work

1940 - 1960
For Sale by Arundel Clocks
Description

Hi

I have for sale a 1960s French striking and repeating/alarm carriage clock made in France by L Epée with the date dials at the bottom with the moon phase dial also, in the Gorge case so a top-of-the-shop heavy carriage clock for the best collections.

This clock has been fully restored and is offered for sale in mint-perfect condition both visually and mechanically I have replaced the springs so will be good for years to come.

The Case

The case is in solid shiny brass in the Gorge case style and stands 18cm high x 9cm wide with a depth of 9cm it is in perfect condition with mint thick bevelled sides/front/back door and top viewing glass.

The case is very shiny and hard to photograph they do not do the clock justice at all.

This clock is very heavy at 3.75 kilos so postage will cost a little more sorry.

The Dial

The dial is in mint condition in white with roman numerals, the face is perfect no cracks or hairlines at all, and the clock also retains its original black moon hands.

The clock has three dials at the bottom one for the day and date (in English) and the centre dial for the alarm setting with the fully working lunar moon phase all functions are in perfect working order.

The Movement

The movement is an eight-day time and strike which strikes the hours and halves via a blue steel gong to the rear also has the repeater button on top to repeat the last hour strike, the movement has been serviced and oiled so keeping a great time over the eight days and has the bonus of the original jewelled platform escapement.

This clock also has a working alarm function and is fully signed on the rear plate.

The original key is still present.

This clock was over 6K new so a big saving to be had.

Overall a very beautiful quality carriage clock by a quality French maker that looks great on display and contains all of its original features this is quite a rare find these days.

I will ship worldwide and pack very carefully.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A carriage clock is a compact, portable spring-driven timepiece developed in France during the early nineteenth century, featuring an overhead carrying handle and glass side panels to view the movement.

Carriage clocks are primarily crafted from heavy polished brass cases with bevelled glass viewing panels and white enamel dials featuring fine painted numerals.

Authentic LEpee timepieces feature precise casing, distinct white enamel dial work, and the makers mark or crossed swords trademark stamped directly onto the movement backplate.

Style the clock as a focal point on a mantelpiece, executive desk, or within a curated bookshelf arrangement alongside classic leather-bound books and metallic accents.

Dust the brass case and glass panels regularly with a soft microfibre cloth, avoid chemical polishes that strip protective coatings, and have the mechanical movement serviced every few years by a horologist.
